An
essay is a short formal writing that explained one particular subject or topic.
The purpose of this kind of writing is to present the writer's argument or
opinion to the readers. Usually, an essay consists of three main parts which
are an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
There are several types of essay to help the writer delivering his argument
properly such as process essays, classification essays, cause and effect
essays, and compare and contrast essays.
Firstly,
one of the types of essay that people use in daily life is a process essay. The
aim of this essay is to give instruction. A process essay is divided into two
kinds of writing: analytical and instructional. An instructional process essay
informs the readers on how to do something, such as how to make a cheesecake,
how to operate a computer, or how to fix a radio. The readers are expected to be
able to do the things instructed after reading the text. In the other side, an
analytical process essay informs the readers on how something works or how it
happens, such as how Zoom conference meeting works or how saffron can help us
is healing from sickness.
Secondly,
there is classification essay which is used to describe a topic that needs to
be categorized. This categorization is done according to a certain principle.
In writing this kind of essay, the thesis statement should include the topic
classified. Usually, there are at least three groups made to write a
classification essay. For example, the topic of music can be divided into
classical, jazz and rock. Meanwhile, cause and effect essays explained the
reasons and the results of something that already happened. There are two types
of organization in writing this essay: block or chain. If block organization is
used then the causes and effects should be written separately. While in a chain
organization, the causes and the effects will be linked.
Next,
the fourth type of essay is compare and contrast essay which can be used to
inform how people, things, places, events, etc are similar or dissimilar. The
purpose of this essay is to show the similarities and differences between
things. Also, to indicate the superiority of one thing than another or to tell
changes over time between two things or situations. Lastly, there is problem or
solution essay. This one is used to distinguish and describe a problem and give
the right solution to it. The topics of this kind of essay can be something
like reducing problems in littering or smoking.
In
short, an essay is a short formal writing about one particular subject from the
writer's point of view. There are five types of essays such as process essays,
classification essays, cause and effect essays, and compare and contrast
essays. We have to understand these types of essay well to write a proper essay
because each of the types has its own purpose.
