La Tenritata Arung Palakka was one of the
famous kings of the Kingdom of Bone. He was known as Arung Palakka, the king
who had the biggest role in freeing the Kingdom of Bone from the Kingdom of
Gowa. He ruled the Kingdom of Bone in 1672-1696. Arung Palakka had many names
such as Daeng Serang and Petta Malampe-E Gemme’na. The 15th King of Bone was
born on November 3, 1672. His was titled as La Tan’ri Tatta To’Urong To-ri
Sompi Patta Malampei Gammana Daeng Serang To’ Appatunru Paduka Sri Sultan Sa’ad
ud’din.
The king was dashing and handsome. He had
long hair and bright eyes. Arung Palakka wore a headband, the colour was
usually red or white. His most common weapon was a spear that he brought
whenever he went. In many paintings, he was always in his bare chest. He wore
chain on his body. Besides the spear, he also brought his traditional knife of
Bugis that he put on his front waist. Both the chain and traditional knife were
made of pure gold.
Arung Palakka was such a generous and
brave man. He always had the ambition to free his people from the Kingdom of
Bone. He thought about his people more than himself. The king cared a lot about
his people. He was known for his kind heart and his sociable soul. Arung
Palakka also always had the spirit and willingness to help people.
The man was the one who led Bone people to
fight against The Kingdom of Gowa along with 600 soldiers from VOC. In 1642,
the Bone Kingdom was attacked by the
Gowa Kingdom. Arung Palakka and his family were brought to Gowa and
forced to be Karaeng Pattinggaloang’s servants. He was fine with it, but deep
down he has shame that he was a prince and his people were suffered. At the
beginning of 1660, he felt so sad seeing about 10.000 old people being dragged
away from Bone to Gowa upon the order of Sultan Hasanuddin. Those people are
being forced to work from day to night without a break. He decided to run away
from Gowa to Batavia. In order to gain help from VOC, Arung Palakka stayed for
years helping them. After years of patience, he finally able to freeing Bone in
1666 with the help of VOC. Sultan Hasanuddin was defeated and he had to sign
the Agreement of Bongaya.
On the whole, Arung Palakka was just a
prince who wanted to fight for his people. Many people might think that Arung
Palakka is a traitor for cooperated with Netherland people, but at the end of
the day, he was only a man who couldn’t stand seeing his people suffered. He
always felt the responsibility toward his people’s pain. The king had the blood
and the pride that he had to fight for. His way might be wrong, people might be
hating on him but for Bone people, he had always been a hero, a patriot and
their beloved king.
